Course Duration

Delivered over 2 days, Face-to-Face

Only once training has been completed learners are required to complete 20 hours of work placement and additional practical observations.

Course Content

  • Control traffic and operate communication devices.
  • Control traffic at traffic signals where signals have been turned off
  • Control traffic on high volume roads.
  • Ensure the WHS requirements are adhered to by all.
  • Implement work procedures to commence controlling traffic and all other road users when signals have been switched off and back on.
  • Communicate regularly with client, personnel, and other relevant parties
  • Prepare to implement traffic management plan.
  • Set out and monitor traffic guidance scheme.
  • Monitor and coordinate work program.
  • Diagnose and solve routine problems.
  • Close down work activities and maintain operating records.

Course Outcome

The combined skill sets provide the skills and knowledge required for those responsible for traffic control and traffic management implementation on a site and road workers under their direction, as described in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management on Temporary Traffic Management Category 2 environments on Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads.

On successful completion of all course requirements and assessments, learners will be issued with:

  • Department of infrastructure and Transport (DIT) is responsible for issuing TTM ID cards on completion.

The units of competency comprise both theoretical and practical components.

  • The practical assessment component is to be undertaken after the practical experience is gained.
  • Practical experience requirements must be completed on declared Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 roads within at least six months of successfully completing the theoretical component.
  • Submission of at least 2 different traffic management plan design types after practical experience gained.

  • Alternative assessment options are available with Workzone Training based on eligibility criteria for both TC1 and TMI1 courses as well as TC2 and TMI2 courses.

All learners must be 16 years or older and will be required to provide photographic identification upon arriving for their course.

This skill set may only be undertaken in addition to:

  • Completion of any of the following skill sets:
    • RIISSS00060 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads
    • RIISSS00061 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for High Volume Roads
    • RIISSS00062 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set for Motorways and Freeways
  • At least 12 months experience applying the relevant skills and knowledge in a temporary traffic management workplace; and
  • Providing evidence of relevant experience setting up at least 20 temporary traffic management types in at least four of the following design types:
    • Pedestrian and cyclist controls
    • Construction sites
    • Lane closures
    • Shoulder closures
    • Night works
    • Use of portable traffic control devices
    • Motorways or freeways
  • At least an AQF Level 6 qualification in a civil construction, traffic engineering, or road design related field; or
  • Entry requirements specifically detailed in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management
  • Ability to read, write, and speak basic English.
  • Learners are required to be reaccredited every 3 years.

Learner Requirements

  • Have a valid Photo ID (i.e. Australian Driver’s Licence, Passport, or Proof of Age Card). This is mandatory for accredited courses.
  • Must have a valid USI to be issued the Statement of Attainment. All information regarding the USI is found at www.usi.gov.au

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Enclosed safety footwear, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts with hi-vis are required.
  • Other sites may have other requirements which will be confirmed at the time of booking.
  • Failure to wear the correct PPE may prevent the participant from completing the practical training and/or assessment.
